Make New York Living More Affordable and Bearable with VOIP

You’ve moved to New York and you miss your folks back home. You can’t, however, afford to make long-distance calls every minute of the day. Well…at least not until you switch from traditional phone to VOIP!

What’s VOIP?
Firstly, VOIP can save your sanity. Because of it, you’ll be less prone to suffer from homesickness. You see, VOIP – also referred to as Voice Over Internet Protocol – doesn’t work the same way the usual phone systems do. Instead of relying on phone or cable lines to get and stay connected, VOIP makes use of broadband connection and software application.

How does it work?
Good question. It might not make a difference with your decision, but it’s always good to know how things work.

Firstly, you need to remember that VOIP mainly makes use of the Internet. Without it, there’s no VOIP. Also, you won’t need typical phone hardware for this, but you might not need to purchase new equipment either. If you’ve got a PC, a headset or speakers, and a microphone, then you’re all set to go. You also need to install a software program, but that will be supplied to you by your VOIP provider; if not, you can always look for the appropriate program to download.

Now that you’ve got all the hardware and software necessary for VOIP to work, all you need to do is make a call and wait for someone to pick it up at the other end of the line. Keep in mind, however, that the person you’re calling must also be using VOIP for the call to push through.

When a call is made, voice data is converted from analog to digital format, compressed, and transmitted over the Internet. The other party’s VOIP system will receive it, decompress, and convert it back to analog so that your voice won’t come out garbled.

What’s the big fuss about?
For one thing, calls made through VOIP are clearer because they make use of digital technology. Of course, clarity and volume may be affected if the hardware you’re using is of inferior quality.

Costs are also significantly lowered, which should be good news for any New Yorker. Cost of living in the city is expensive and VOIP can go a long way in helping you make ends meet while receiving daily comfort from phone calls to home.

Convinced of the rightfulness of installing VOIP? If so, contact your local provider to know more about your options.
